Maseru, ANGOLA, January 23 - The President of the SADC Mission for the Kingdom of Lesotho (SAPMIL), the Angolan Matias Bertino Matondo, was received in audience by King Letsie III, with whom he discussed issues related to the mission, Angop learned on Tuesday.,

Speaking at the end of the 30-minute meeting at the Royal Palace, Bertino Matondo, who is also the chairman of the SADC Supervisory Committee for the Kingdom of Lesotho, said it was a courtesy visit, the first since the launch of the Mission in November and the deployment of the contingent of the regional organization last December.

The Kingdom of Lesotho has been experiencing a political crisis for a number of years, characterized by coups and attempted coups d'état and the holding of early elections incluiding  assassinations of the heads of the Armed Forces, the last of which has victimized the Lieutenant-General Khoantle Motsomotso, in September 2017.

In the face of the events, the four-party government led by Thomas Thabane called on SADC to send a preventive force to his country, culminating in the deployment last December of the SAPMIL contingent of 269 soldiers, police and intelligence officers as well as civilians.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has recommended to the Government of Lesotho the development and implementation of a road map containing a set of political, administrative, parliamentary, judicial and other reforms aimed at restoring peace and stability in the kingdom.

The head of the SADC Supervisory Committee for the Kingdom of Lesotho has also met with the First Minister, Thomas Thabane, from whom he received assurances of full support from his government to SAPMIL.
