A large earthquake has rocked Spain, affecting more than two million people, according to experts.

Witnesses said tremors made their homes shake as the 3.7 magnitude quake struck last night.

It happened shortly before 8pm on Saturday - 9pm in the UK.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said more than two million people felt the impact of the earthquake, with areas close to the border with Portugal most affected.

Cities including Vigo, Caldelas, Esposende and Braga were among the faces where tremors caused alarm.

Writing on the EMSC website, one person said: "I felt the earthquake. It was very fast, but I and the people at my side felt the noise and crockery shaking."

Another said there was "a lot of vibration", while one commenter described it as "very short and strong".

And one person in Matosinhos in Portugal, more than 100km from the epicentre, wrote: "Lasted just a second, but strong. Made the glasses in the kitchen cabinet tingle."

No injuries are known to be reported.

Just hours earlier a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Soloman Islands in the Pactific.
