The Tiverton Public Library has announced a comprehensive calendar of programs for May 2024. With an all-star lineup of speakers, artists, and craftspeople, there is something for everyone in the community.

One highlight of the summer season at the library is the annual Book Group. This year’s theme is “Crying in H Mart,” by Michelle Zauner, and copies of the book will be available at the library for check-out. The book club is also open to the public on a Saturday night basis from 6 to 8 p.m. during storytime and family programs.

For those looking for a more active experience, the library is offering a variety of craft and technology workshops. These include one-on-one tech help from a library cardholder, mobile printing now available, and weekly watercolor group. The library also offers a variety of presentations and talks, including a screening of the film “A&E: Jackson Pollock” and a book talk by Javier Zamora, the author of the powerful memoir “Solito.”

In addition to the summer programs, the Tiverton Public Library also offers a variety of programs for the whole family, including storytime for kids, book clubs, story clubs, and family programs. One-on-One Tech Help

We want you to feel comfortable and confident with technology! Our tech coordinator offers free tech help to all residents. You don’t even need to be a member of the library to use this service. Mobile Printing Now Available

You can now print from your laptop or smartphone in the library! No library card or email is required. Stop by the Information Desk for instructions. 

Monday mornings, 10:30-11:30am, Bulgarmarsh Park

Book Walk & Talk

Meet us by the picnic tables at Bulgarmarsh Park for a leisurely walk around the path and an informal chat about what you’ve been reading and watching lately. This program is weather-dependent. Tuesday afternoons, 12:30-2:30pm

Weekly Watercolor Group

Whether you are a seasoned pro or still learning, you are welcome to come and work on your own watercolor painting projects. This is not a class, but a space to paint and socialize with fellow enthusiasts. Must bring your own projects and supplies.

Craft Circle

Knitters, quilters, crafters – whatever you make, come craft with us in the Community Room on the first Wednesday of every month! Socialize with fellow crafters, get project ideas, and share tips and advice. Must bring your own projects and supplies.

What to Do – Medicare 101 on Turning 65

Most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. Your Medicare enrollment steps will differ depending on whether or not you are collecting retirement benefits or currently working. Christopher Ireland, SHIP Program Counselor from Child & Family of RI, will help you navigate options available to you.

Rhode Island Independence Day

What happened on May 4th in 1908? Why is the figure on top of the Rhode Island State House called “The Independent Man?” What was the “lively experiment” of 1663? Come find out the answers to these and other questions you might have about the smallest state in the United States of America on Saturday, May 4th, at 2:00pm. Susan Anderson from the Tiverton Historical Society will give a presentation on “Rhode Island Independence Day” in the Community Room.

Crochet Club

Join us in the Learning Center as we learn to crochet! All skill levels welcome! Open to teens and adults.

Facing the Mourning – A Grief Writing Workshop Series

This is an interactive support group designed to help with the grieving after a death by using visual and thought-provoking tools. During the four sessions, attendees will share their story, build memorials, journal, and write letters as a group. Facilitated by Certified Grief Educator Kim Shute of Memorial Funeral Homes. United Way 211 Van – A Free, Confidential Resource

The United Way 211 van will be in the parking lot of the Tiverton Public Library from 9:30am to 1:00pm on the second Friday of every month. 211 is a confidential service that can connect you with housing, food, affordable childcare, and much more. Union Public Library Book Club

The Union Public Library Book Group will meet at the Union Public Library at 1:00pm on May 16th to discuss Foster by Claire Keegan. Copies of the book can be picked up at both the Tiverton Public and Union Public Libraries. New members are always welcome!

FREE Paper Shredding Event at the Library

Safely and securely clear out your old tax documents, files, and other sensitive materials at the library! Shred RI will be in the library parking lot on Saturday, May 18th, from 10:00am to 1:00pm to help you dispose of your documents. Maximum of two (2) paper grocery bags or bankers boxes per person. Papers will be shredded on site. Sponsored by the Town of Tiverton and Tiverton Library Services.

Art House Film Nights: Jackson Pollock

Join us on the third Tuesday of every month for a screening of a contemporary feature film or documentary and discussion focusing on artists, designers, photographers, and other creative fields. Presented in partnership with the Tiverton Arts Committee. This month, we will watch and discuss A&E’s Biography: Jackson Pollock and the documentary Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Living Literature Presents: Solito 

Three local actors from Living Literature will give a readers’ theatre-style presentation of Solito by Javier Zamora, a powerful memoir about a young boy’s harrowing journey from El Salvador to the USA. Created in collaboration with Rhode Island Center for the Book and The Manton Avenue Project, in support of the 2024 Reading Across RI community read.
