NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has busted a drug nexus operating from Afghanistan to Punjab. A man from Himachal Pradesh who was the main link of the cartel and was supplying drugs in Punjab has been arrested. The drugs were procured from Afghanistan and supplied to Punjab via Delhi.
The accused has been identified as Pankaj Vaid alias Sanju Baba, a native of Amritsar.
He is also wanted in a UAPA case in Jammu.
DCP (crime) KPS Malhotra said that a team of anti-narcotics task force had last month busted a drug nexus operating from Afghanistan. During the operation, 21.4 kg fine quality heroin worth Rs 130 crore was recovered and four people, including one Afghan national, were arrested.
“We found that one of the main links of the cartel, who was supplying heroin in Punjab, was Vaid. He was the nodal point for all local drug suppliers who were engaged in heroin trafficking there,” he said.
After the arrest of his associates, the accused went underground and started changing his hideouts very frequently. Raids were conducted in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. “With the help of technical analysis and manual surveillance, Vaid was finally caught from Himachal Pradesh. Two cars were recovered from his possession,” police said.
Vaid is a habitual offender. Earlier, he was arrested in a theft and arms act case. While he was lodged in Amritsar Jail, he came in touch with drug peddlers who had connections in Afghanistan and were trafficking drugs. They told Vaid about the profit margin and lured him to join their syndicate. After coming out from the jail, he started working with them, police said.

During interrogation, cops came to know about Vaid’s properties in different parts of India. “He has six properties in different states. All of these have been acquired through the money which he got from drug trafficking. It also came to notice that he had destroyed a huge consignment after his counterparts were arrested by the task force,” police said.
“Raids are going on to nab other traffickers,” the officer said.
