A Zimbabwean social media user Melody Chariā€Ž claims that it is impossible for Zimbabwean government to control social media use, but can only control conventional ways of communications.

The remarks come at a time when President Robert Mugabe recently appointed Patrick Chinamasa as a minister for Cyber detection.

"This is actually not true. The government of Zimbabwe can only control and monitor maybe voice calls made from Zimbabwean lines but they cannot control social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, not only will this be a violation of the privacy policy you agree to when signing up for an account to these social networks, but also because the government has no resources to do so," Chari said.

"All Facebook, Twitter , WhatsApp, Instagram messages are all encrypted and can't be decoded by any third party. Feel free to share what you want on these platforms, as for voice calls made directly from Zimbabwean cell phone numbers, just be careful, there's a possibility they might be able to hear what you say but only if you mention a few key words like President, bomb, coup etc... there's literally millions of phone calls on a daily basis we're talking thousands if not millions of hours of talk time, and billions of messages send on WhatsApp.. who do you think has time to listen to all of that?? Let alone read those messages? And using what equipment exactly to do that??"

She said people must not be fooled by these people, feel free to share what you want.

"Enjoy your WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and any other social networks as you please," she said.
