A Connecticut university is shutting down for at least one day on Monday after nearly 100 students became sick with an unknown illness.

Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., was shut down after around 100 students had symptoms of a sickness including stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea, Fox News reported.

John Clark, the president of the college, said he made the decision to close down the campus to “protect our university community from infection and spread of disease” in a statement released Sunday night.

Clark said after speaking with local and university health officials that together they “decided this is the best and most conservative course of action.”

“Although we are aware of a limited number of affected student, based on our discussions with the the Connecticut Department of Health, the Danbury Department of Health, Danbury Hospital and the WCSU Director of Health Services, we have decided this is the best and most conservative course of action to protect our university community from infection and spread of disease,” Clark’s statement read.

Western Connecticut State University recommended that students go home if they can and asked students who are sick to stay in their rooms to prevent the spread of the unidentified illness.

Crews are reportedly working to disinfect the school.
