The Tajik aluminum plant will stop working for two years in connection with the construction of a new joint Tajik-Chinese aluminum enterprise.

This was stated by head of the Information and Public Relations Department of SUE Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) Igor Sattarov on March 1.

Negotiations on the construction of a new plant, which are being conducted on behalf of the leaders of Tajikistan and China, are close to completion, according to Sattarov.

The agreement on the construction of the new aluminum plant was reached with Chinese company Yunnan Construction and Investment Holding Group during the visit of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon to China in late August 2017.

This Chinese company and TALCO have reached an agreement on the construction of a new aluminum plant on the territory of the existing aluminum enterprise with the installation of fully automated electrolysis baths with a capacity of 540 kA. The Chinese company has already prepared a preliminary feasibility study and is currently engaged in the development of the project.

The production capacity of the new aluminum plant will be 503,000 tonnes per year. Its structure will also include a foundry (800,000 tonnes per year) and an anode (300,000 tonnes per year) production.

The cost of construction is estimated at $1.6 billion. The approximate time for its completion is one year and eight months.

“I cannot speak about how much money will be invested by the parties. This is a commercial secret,” Sattarov said.

The construction of the new plant will create 1,100 new jobs with a high salary for the current conditions of Tajikistan, according to the head of the information and analytical department of TALCO.

At the same time, the new aluminum plant will significantly save electricity and basic raw materials, such as alumina, cryolite, aluminum fluoride, and also anodes. The company will create 1,100 new jobs.

The beginning of the construction of the plant is scheduled for 2018. The construction period of the project worth $1.6 billion is one year and a half.
