Going the way of Tumblr: OnlyFans to ban sexually explicit content from platform

Subscription social media platform OnlyFans is launching its own streaming platform and app called OFTV.

OnlyFans will be removing sexually explicit content after it rose to fame for its ... sexually explicit content.

In a statement emailed to USA TODAY, the platform said it will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct.

The move comes after the company has been seeking funding from outside investors at a $1 billion valuation.

The ban will start Oct. 1 and is the result of requests from banking partners and companies that handle financial transactions, said OnlyFans in its statement.

Creators on the OnlyFans platform will still be allowed to put up nude photos and videos, provided they’re consistent with OnlyFans’ policy, according to their statement. It's not clear what that policy is, and the company did not specify.

Sex Workers Outreach Project USA, a national social justice network, said it was "very concerned" by this move from OnlyFans.

"We have been long time supporters of harm reduction, dignity, and supporting the rights of sex workers and trafficked persons. OnlyFans has created a policy that will create more harm for both sex workers and trafficked persons in the long run. Pushing sex workers further underground while simultaneously removing safer platforms has consistently resulted in more harm," the organization said in a statement to USA TODAY.

OnlyFans isn't the only platform where creators can post exclusive content. While OnlyFans takes a 20% cut from creators' earnings, major competitors like Patreon charge between 5-12% and Cameo charges 25%.

Reactions on Twitter included comparisons to Tumblr, which similarly banned sexually explicit content in 2018, and outrage for sex workers who bolstered usage of the platform.

Earlier this week, OnlyFans launched its own free OFTV streaming platform and app of video content including cooking, comedy, fitness, and music. cooking, comedy, music, and more.
