Police Warnings About a Social Media Game Encouraging Suicide is Targeting Kids

UNDATED (WBAP/KLIF) Police and school districts around the country and the world are increasingly warning parents about a dangerous new game called  ‘The Momo Challenge.’

It’s spreading across social media and cell phones by way of a random message prompting people to contact ‘Momo’ — a frightening image of a creature with bulging eyes. It encourages kids to engage in violent acts, even suicide.

Among police warnings:

*Do not engage in phone or text conversations with strangers
*Do not accept game requests from unspecified sources
*Immediately block and report such instances
*Monitor your kids online and social media activity

Locally, David Tilley with the Plano Police Department says he has heard reports about the challenge, but is not aware of problems in the city. We have reached out to several local police agencies for comment.

In this video a boy, as young as 5 or 6 talks about the disturbing challenge.

A YouTube user has posted a video urging social media sites to get a handle of this type of dangerous activity.

Meantime, this Twitter warning from a California school which says the ‘Momo Challenge’ is a suicide challenge.

Warnings about the dangers of the The Momo Challenge were sparked by the suicide of a 12-year old in Argentina back in August.
